Louise chose Mother Theresa as a subject for this portrait along a theme of 'women of strong voice' which she was exploring. This image shows Mother Theresa in an introspective manner. She was inspired not so much with Catholicism as with Mother Theresa as a figure of humble devotion to others over a lifetime. Louise’s use of purple connects to the symbolism of feminism.

PORTRAITS

Louise’s collection of mosaic portraits represent figures she sees as representing strong voices. Each piece of Italian smalti glass is hand-cut and meticulously placed to create these works. What is important in her process is to capture the use of light on the faces, whereby imbuing the works with a strong sense of emotion and character. The use of natural stone backgrounds create another layer supporting the characters portrayed.
